Reduce Homework Time and Stress

homework stress

Parents have asked us why homework takes their child, longer than their peers and what they can do about it. There are key issues and what parents can do about it. The key issues often include:

1. Attention is a part of the problem problem, both in class and while doing homework
2. Vision issues – too often these student’s eyes are either: not working together; skipping words or lines when
reading; or they have difficulty copying off the board
3- Becoming tense when doing homework.

When your child has trouble paying attention in class, they often must be re-taught the information at home. What makes matters worse is that your child’s homework time which should have taken 45 minutes gets stretched to 1 and ½ hours due to re-teaching. Then to over 2 hours because they cannot stay focused.

Vision issues impact their homework in several ways:
1. Your child may have trouble copying the notes off the board correctly and you spend time trying to understand the
assignment
2. He m ayskip words or lines when reading, further complicating life
3. When he does math problems they do not often align their work correctly, they miss minus and division signs so
they make careless errors

Children often get tense when doing homework and battles often follow. What often happens is:
- Children are too intimidated to ask questions in class and they simply get stuck
- The child or parent gets angry and then …
- An argument starts which often escalates into a battle

It is recommended is that parents:
- Stay clam with your child
- If your child gets stressed, give them a a short break
- Hydrate them before doing homework and while doing homework, water is best
- During reading, use a ruler or their finger to keep them on the right line
- If the attention problem is a big issue, consider getting an ADHD diagnosis – if your child has a learning disability or attention issues significantly impact their academic performance, the child could qualify for an Individualized Education Plan and they could get accommodations for homework at school which might include:

Getting copies of notes – either provided by the teacher or by another buddy
Seating closer to the teacher to improve attention
The teacher will check to make sure the student has written the assignment correctly
The teacher may have you sign that they completed the assignment and putting it in a place they can find it
An warning system, where the teacher alerts you to issues early before an issue arises
If vision is a major issue seek professional help – even if your child has 20/20 vision

Once you have everything is place for your child, homework will become second nature. Your child will be able to complete their assignments in record time.

As a parent you have many important priorities when it comes to your child it is important to read with him. You need to keep your child safe, healthy, and loved. In today’s hectic world, we often spend so much time engaged on those priorities we forget another important area — mental stimulation. Parents need to engage our children’s minds as well as their bodies in order for them to grow and learn. One of the best ways to achieve this goal is through reading.

There are a number of reasons why you should read to your child. If you are already reading to your child on a daily basis, these reasons should strengthen your resolve and if you are regularly reading to your child they should challenge you to do so:

1. Carefully selected story challenges and engages your child’s mind. Through books your child can not only re-live experiences in their own life but also learn and experience cultures and events far removed from their current scope.

2. Reading out loud demonstrates what good reading sounds like and provides a goal for the child’s literacy efforts. As your child learns to read, he or she will need role models to follow.

3. Sharing a variety of books improves your child’s knowledge of language including vocabulary, sentence structure, and pronunciation. The more your kids knows about words and language then the more knowledge and experience she will have to draw upon while learning to read and the easier it will be for her to learn.

4. Reading with your kids helps them connect print words and meaning. Children learn to read many words simply through repeated exposure and memorization. It is not enough to simply provide words and instead the words must also be put into context.

5. Reading demonstrates the purpose of books, such as that we read books from front cover to back cover and a page from top to bottom, and a line from left to right. Those of us with long experience with books take this knowledge for granted but a young child needs to learn these simple rules.

6. A well-written story stimulates your child’s imagination and creativity which can promote their own creative efforts and play.

7. Reading a mixture of stories helps children learn how story structure and narrative works which will help in literacy as well as social interaction. Throughout history humans have used story telling and narrative in our professional and personal interactions and the people who have the best grasp of narrative technique are often the most successful in these areas. Give your child a head start to learning and reading.

8. Make literacy a priority in your life to demonstrate its importance to your child so they will make it a priority in theirs. If your child sees you read then it will become important.

9. Reading to a child also promotes physical contact as your child sits on your lap or cuddles beside you. This will build a bond between parent and child. It provides another opportunity to spend time with your child.

10. Listening to the your voice will be very soothing and especially when it is the voice of a loved one. It will help lower stress levels and bring comfort. Children face many stresses during the day just as you. You might find taking the time to read to your child not only reduces their stress level but yours as well. This is a very import aspect of reading for a happy life.

Make reading to your child a part of your regular daily routine, also include spontaneous opportunities as well. Not only will it make you closer to your child and provide lasting memories, it will give your child the benefits that reading is important and encourage your child to be a lifelong reader.

Rainy Day Fun

Some fun ways to spend time together when the weather outside is stormy are sometime difficult to figure out. There are many cheap ways to spend time with your kids. Reading a story to your child is a wonderful experience. Listening to music and dancing together can also be fun. Another great fun activity is building forts and tents with blankets by moving chairs together. Bring in a flashlight and read a book to your child or pretend to have a campfire with marshmallows.

Play dough is the perfect fun way to spend a creative time together. Roll it, mold it with cookie cutters and plastic knives and create great works of art. It’s fun and can be used over and over again. You can make play dough and make different colors. Here is one great play dough recipe I have used many times with my own kids.

4 cups flour
1 cup salt
4 cups water
4 tablespoons oil
food coloring
Mix all ingredients in a zip lock bag. Knead the play dough until it is completely formed and no longer sticky. You may want to divide the mixture into several bags and left the kids knead it themselves. Add a little food color and continue to mix. When it is completely mixed let the fun begin.

Shaving cream art is also fun and easy. Using a vinyl table cloth just spray some shaving cream on and let the kids use like finger paint. I would recommend using the sensitive skin brand of shaving cream especially if you have allergy prone children. Another great favorite is collages. You just need construction paper, some magazines, school glue and safety scissors. Have the children cut out pictures of interest to them and glue them all over the construction paper. Once the projects dry hang them on your fridge.

Another great fun recipe is for Slime. You will need equal part of liquid starch and white glue. Just mix until it forms a slimy ball. Use food coloring if you desire. As far as recipes go, cooking with children is another way to spend the day. Cook from scratch or just use boxed desert or cake mixes. The kids will have a ball and enjoy eating the food creation they have made.

Just use a little imagination and a stormy rainy day can become a memorable occasion.
